SEO, GEO and AEO: what they mean, and why agribusiness should care

Three abbreviations, one goal: being found and chosen when it matters. Here is how they differ, without the jargon pile-up.

People still search Google. They also get answers from featured snippets, People Also Ask, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, often without visiting a website. For NZ agribusiness, you need clarity in all of those places, not only on page one.

SEO

Search engine optimisation

Rank in Google and Bing for the phrases your customers type, then earn the click to your site.

AEO

Answer engine optimisation

Structure pages so a specific question gets a clear on-site answer: FAQs, service pages, insights.

GEO

Generative engine optimisation

Be cited inside AI-generated answers: consistent facts, proof, and copy that tools can quote accurately.

Same website. Three different jobs.

They share one foundation: a clear, fast, factual site. They are not the same thing, and you need all three.

SEO: search engine optimisation

SEO is the long-standing work of helping your site rank in Google (and similar search engines) for the phrases your customers type. For agribusiness that might be category terms (agribusiness marketing agency), service terms (rural video production), or regional intent (marketing support South Canterbury). Many people still search “marketing agency”, but Artikel & Swint is a creative agency that also delivers marketing, web development, data and marketing intelligence, videography, photography, and related capability work for New Zealand’s primary sector.

SEO still rests on fundamentals: clear pages, accurate titles, fast enough load times, helpful content, and links from reputable places.

AEO: answer engine optimisation

AEO means structuring your site so specific questions get specific answers: FAQs, service pages, and insight articles that mirror how buyers search (including voice and AI tools).

Examples for agribusiness:

  • “How do I reach farmers online in New Zealand?”
  • “What should an agribusiness website include?”
  • “Who specialises in rural media planning?”

If those answers live on your site, in your voice, you improve both traditional search and newer answer tools.

GEO: generative engine optimisation

GEO is about visibility when answers are generated: summaries that pull from many sources. The idea is the same as classic SEO (clarity, trust, consistency), but the “result page” is often a single answer, not a list of links.

For NZ primary-sector brands, GEO rewards:

  • A consistent description of who you are, where you operate, and what you deliver
  • Evidence: projects, sectors, people, locations
  • Content that matches how real people ask questions (“Who works with dairy co-ops on brand?”)

None of them replaces a strong brand or good relationships in the paddock. They amplify work you are already doing.

Agribusiness angle: category and regional terms (SEO), seasonal and sector Q&A (AEO), and a trusted NZ primary-sector story that AI can quote (GEO) work best together on one refreshed site.

Honest note on technology

Your site must also allow reputable crawlers where your policy permits. Blocking everything by default can hurt visibility in AI-assisted search. We track that alongside classic SEO in the A&S Intelligence Analytics app, including whether AI search bots can read your site.
